Bonding Glass to Metal with UV Adhesive

Glass-to-metal is a classic UV bond because you can cure straight through the glass to the joint, the metal side doesn’t need to see light at all. The wins are getting the wavelength through the glass and choosing an adhesive that tolerates the very different expansion of glass and metal.

Metal is opaque, so the UV must reach the adhesive through the glass. Ordinary glass passes longer UVA and visible while blocking short UV, so the source band has to be one the glass transmits and the adhesive cures at. The bond line also has to absorb the stress from glass and metal expanding at different rates with temperature.

Step by Step

  1. 1 Choose an adhesive for dissimilar substrates. Pick a UV adhesive rated for glass and metal with enough flexibility to handle their different thermal expansion. A too-rigid bond can crack the glass over temperature cycles.
  2. 2 Cure through the glass. Aim the guide at the joint through the glass side. Use a wavelength the glass transmits, longer UVA passes; short UV is blocked.
  3. 3 Manage heat on the glass. With an arc source, use a heat filter so infrared doesn’t thermally shock the glass during exposure.
  4. 4 Verify the bond line. Confirm the adhesive cured fully at the joint, a radiometer on the metal side (or a test coupon) confirms real dose reached through the glass.

Common Pitfalls

  • A too-rigid adhesive, differential expansion of glass and metal can crack a rigid bond; choose one with give.
  • A wavelength the glass blocks, short UV won’t reach the joint; use a longer band the glass passes.
  • IR heating the glass, a heat filter prevents thermal shock during an arc cure.
