UV Safety Guide

A working reference for anyone operating spot UV curing equipment. It doesn't replace your site's EH&S procedures or the system manual, read those too.

Understanding the UV bands
Curing uses ultraviolet light, split into UVA (315–400 nm), UVB (280–315 nm), and UVC (100–280 nm). LED systems like SkyBeam and SkyWand emit a narrow UVA band and essentially no UVB/UVC. The arc-lamp SunSpot 2 is broad-spectrum and does emit some UVB/UVC, which is what makes it useful for certain chemistries, but also means its stray light warrants more care.
Eye protection
UV can cause photokeratitis ("welder's flash") and long-term damage, never look into the beam or guide tip. Wear UV-blocking eyewear rated OD 4+ across the source band; the shade-5.0 eyewear included with each system, UV0496 shade-5.0 fit-overs ship with both the SunSpot 2 and the SkyBeam; the sport-contour UV2232 is an optional upgrade, meets this, and a face shield adds coverage for prolonged manual work.
Skin protection
Direct UVA on skin causes erythema (reddening) with prolonged exposure. Keep hands and forearms out of the beam path; for extended hand curing, wear gloves and sleeves. Spot curing confines energy to a 2–12 mm spot, which limits incidental exposure, but the beam itself is intense.
Engineering controls
Contain stray light at the source. On open benches use a shield panel or curtain; for automated cells, enclose the cure point and wire an interlock so the source can't fire while the guard is open, SkyBeam provides an interlock input for this. Position work so reflections off shiny fixtures don't reach nearby operators.
Arc-lamp specifics
Broad-spectrum arc sources can generate ozone in confined spaces, ventilate the work area. The lamp housing runs hot; let it cool before servicing, and use the shutter between cures. Spent mercury short-arc lamps contain a small amount of mercury: handle them intact and recycle through a lamp-recycling program, see Replacement Lamps for module handling.
LED-specific notes
LED sources add almost no infrared heat and produce no ozone, so the environmental hazards are lower and instant on/off reduces idle exposure. The UVA eye and skin precautions above still apply in full, a narrow band doesn't make an intense beam safe to look at.

Support & RMA

Warranty service
Every system carries a 2-year OEM warranty. If something fails in service, email us the model, serial, and symptom and we'll arrange repair or replacement, advance replacement is available for line-down situations. Terms in Returns & Warranty.
Open a support case
Email sales@uvspotshop.com with your model and part number, serial number, a description of the symptom, and photos or a short video if you can. It gets us to a fix faster.
Spares & consumables
Keep a lamp module, LED head, or light guide on the shelf so a swap is minutes, not days. Browse Replacement Lamps and Light Guides, or ask us to stock spares against your systems.
