Curing Oversized Parts That Can’t Come to a Bench

A benchtop UV source assumes the part comes to it. Large panels, weldments, frames, and enclosures can’t, they’re too big to fixture under a fixed guide. A cordless handheld wand flips it: you carry the cure to each joint, wherever it sits on the part.

Curing is line-of-sight and local, a joint only needs the source at that joint for a few seconds. For an oversized part, moving a light 200 grams to each bond is trivial where moving the part is impossible. A cordless wand makes every joint on a large assembly reachable.

Recommended Setup
SkyWand ›

The SkyWand is a cordless handheld UV LED wand (365 & 405 nm) with roughly two hours of runtime per pack, you walk it around a large part and cure each joint in place. For volume at a station, a benchtop system is faster, but it can’t reach a joint on a part it can’t hold.

Step by Step

  1. 1 Confirm adhesive matches the wand. The SkyWand emits 365 & 405 nm, make sure the adhesive cures at one of those bands before relying on it.
  2. 2 Charge for the job size. A large part may have many joints; start with a full pack and keep the spare charged so you don’t stall mid-part.
  3. 3 Work joint to joint. Apply adhesive and cure each bond in place, holding the wand close for a few seconds per joint. Move around the part as needed.
  4. 4 Track what’s cured. On a big assembly with many bonds, mark or map cured joints so none is missed.
  5. 5 Verify each bond. Confirm each joint is hard and tack-free before the part moves on.

Common Pitfalls

  • Running out of battery mid-part, keep the spare pack charged for a large multi-joint assembly.
  • Missing a joint on a big part, track cured bonds so none is skipped.
  • Expecting benchtop throughput, the wand wins on reach, not on speed for high volume.

Questions

How do I UV-cure a part too big to fit under a curing system?

Bring the cure to the part with a cordless handheld UV wand like the SkyWand (365 & 405 nm). You carry the light to each joint and cure it in place, the practical answer for panels, frames, and assemblies too large to fixture under a benchtop source.

Can I cure adhesive on a large assembly without moving it?

Yes, a handheld wand cures each joint where it sits, so a large or installed assembly never has to move. Confirm the adhesive cures at the wand’s wavelength and keep a charged spare battery for many-joint parts.

Is a handheld wand strong enough to cure structural bonds on big parts?

It cures the same photo-initiated adhesives a benchtop LED does, at the wand’s wavelengths, one joint at a time. Match the adhesive to 365/405 nm, hold the wand close, and verify each bond, for high volume at a fixed point, a benchtop system is faster.
