How to Tack SMD Components Before Reflow with UV

Surface-mount parts that shift between placement and reflow cause bridges, tombstones, and rejects. A UV-tack adhesive fixes each part in one to three seconds of spot exposure, the joint is held before the board ever reaches the oven, and the tack burns off or stays inert through reflow depending on the chemistry you choose.

Tacking adhesives are photo-initiated acrylics that gel the instant their initiator sees enough UV of the right wavelength. Spot curing puts a concentrated cone of that UV exactly on the dot of adhesive under the part, no oven pre-bake, no waiting, no heat into the board. Throughput is set by how fast you can index the guide from part to part, not by cure time.

Recommended Setup
SunSpot 2 ›

The SunSpot 2’s 200 W broad-spectrum arc (275–650 nm, >18,000 mW/cm² UVA) cures any tacking adhesive regardless of what wavelength its datasheet calls for, so you are never blocked by chemistry. For a UVA/visible tacking adhesive on a fixtured line, the SkyBeam’s matched LED channels are the lower-maintenance choice.

Step by Step

  1. 1 Dispense a small dot. Place the minimum tacking adhesive that will hold the part, a dot at one corner or under the body is enough. Excess only slows the cure and can wick onto pads.
  2. 2 Position the part. Set the component on its pads. The tack holds placement; it does not need to be the structural bond.
  3. 3 Bring the guide tip close. Hold the 5 mm guide tip a few millimetres above the adhesive. Intensity falls off quickly with distance, so close and consistent beats far and guessed.
  4. 4 Expose for one to three seconds. Trigger with the foot pedal. Most tacking acrylics gel in 1–3 s under a SunSpot 2; confirm your exact time once with a scrap board.
  5. 5 Index to the next part. Move to the next dot. With a dual-pole splitter you can tack two locations per exposure and roughly halve indexing time.

Common Pitfalls

  • Curing from too far away, a 5 mm guide loses intensity fast; keep the tip close and the distance repeatable.
  • Too much adhesive, a big bead cures skin-first and stays soft underneath; keep the dot small.
  • Assuming the tack is the final bond, a tack holds placement through handling and reflow; if you need structural strength, choose a structural UV adhesive and full-cure it.

Questions

How long does it take to UV-tack an SMD component?

Typically one to three seconds per dot under a 200 W SunSpot 2 with a 5 mm guide held close to the adhesive. The exact time depends on the adhesive and wavelength; verify once on a scrap board and it stays constant.

Will the UV tack survive reflow?

That depends on the adhesive you choose, some tacking acrylics are formulated to hold through reflow, others are designed to be temporary. Match the adhesive datasheet to your thermal profile; the curing equipment is the same either way.

Do I need a special wavelength to tack SMD parts?

A broad-spectrum arc source like the SunSpot 2 cures any tacking adhesive because it emits across 275–650 nm. If your adhesive is a specific UVA/visible LED-cure formula and you are tacking on a fixtured line, a wavelength-matched SkyBeam channel is more efficient.
